Solar PV Panels

Did you know we can supply you with a range of solar PV panels- to help get you started on saving money on your energy bill!
Solar PV panels offer you a way to reduce your carbon footprint while also cutting down on your energy usage.
Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels capture the sun's energy and convert it into electricity that can be used for:

  • powering your home / business
  • storing in a battery, for later use
  • sending back to the grid, for compensation

How can solar energy help you?

Solar panels are much easier than you think to install and, as soon as they're up, you can start benefiting from solar power. Based off EDF Energy's article A guide to solar panels, they state "With a four-kWp system, you can save between £210 and £514/year on your bills (based on the October 2022 Government Energy Price Guarantee unit rates for electricity)."

Solar energy has been quickly gathering popularity in the UK as it becomes more affordable and easier to generate than ever before. It is a clean and renewable way on generating energy to power up your home or business, whilst also saving you money.

No you do not need a permit to install solar panels, as they are considered 'permitted development' however there will still be other limitations you would have to take into consideration. Something you will not have to worry about is maintenance. They are generally installed in such an angle that it allows rain to run off freely, washing dirt and dust away. So long as you keep them from becoming blocked by dirt, they are said to last well over 25 years with little loss in efficiency.

How do solar PV panels work?

Getting into the more technical side of things, there are two types of solar panels, thermal and PV. While thermal panels are good for your hot water requirements, PV solar panels are more effective at gathering energy and since we tend to use a lot of energy- they are your most cost-effective option here.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems change sunlight into electricity. The solar PV panels are constructed of many cells, made from layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon. When light is shined on the material, a flow of electricity is created. Direct sunlight is not necessary, which is good news for our cloudy days in Britain. Obviously, the stronger the sunshine, the more electricity is collected so it is recommended you install these panels south-facing.

Your typical solar PV system with be made up of around 10 panels, each generating around 355W of DC energy (under strong sunlight). Since many household appliances use AC electricity, an inverter is installed along with the system to covert DC electricity into AC. This electricity can be used throughout your home, or exported to the grid.

You might want to consider signing up for a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff, if eligible. What this does is, it allows you to earn money for solar energy you do not use. You will get a set rate of each unit of electricity you export to the grid. Alternatively, if this is too giant of a leap but you still wish to be more environmentally friendly, you may want to look into low-carbon tariff.
